The Canadian Online Publishing Awards (COPA) shortlisted three articles by Working Draft magazine in its Academic categories. Canada’s most extensive Digital Publishing Awards Program, COPA, showcases and supports content creators by recognizing and awarding leading digital publishing in Canada.
COPA entries are reviewed by a panel of 90 judges, who are heavy hitters currently working in the communications industry. Working Draft Magazine’s recognition by COPA underscores its commitment to excellence in digital publishing.
With the awards open to student from across the country, Working Draft’s students and graduates are competing with the other finalists alongside postsecondary institutions like the University of British Columbia’s School of Journalism, Writing, and Media, Toronto Metropolitan University, Humber College, and more.
Working Draft magazine is written by Red River College Polytechnic Creative Communications students. Its white papers, feature articles, and creative nonfiction pieces are for readers who enjoy a deep dive.
One of the shortlisted pieces, “Camp Like a Girl,” which is competing in the Academic “Best Feature Article” category was written by RRC Polytech graduate and journalist Rachel Ferstl.
The piece asks readers to consider what is socially acceptable for women? In the beginning of the story, Rachel stands at the top of a cliff, waiting and ready to plunge into the water below. Her writing explores perceptions of women’s safety in the backcountry and introduces the concept of ecofeminism and how it relates to her love of the wilderness. She explores barriers to becoming an outdoor woman, how to develop the skills and confidence necessary to feel comfortable in the backcountry, and where to find community.
Alongside Ferstl, Caleb Dueck’s creative nonfiction piece “Making my Peace with Babel” is up for “Best Feel Good Story” and Robel Berhane’s memoirs “Almost Home” is up for “Best Multicultural Story.”
Creative Communication’s 2023 journalism specialization students also got shortlisted in the Best Podcast category for their investigative podcast The Basement: A Son’s Quest for Justice and are competing against organizations like the CBC.
The 2023 COPA winners will be announced on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024. For people unable to attend the in-person event in Toronto, a hybrid event will be held over Zoom.
